Steven Peterson: Software Engineer

- Dream Design Develop -

I am an aspiring Software Engineer, and recent graduate of Rowan University(NJ) - Computer Science Dept.

I recently founded Dragonfly Software, and am developing environmental-effects for the Torque Game Engine.

Electronic Entertainment Expo - 2005

E3 - 2005

This year I flew out to E3(Electronic Entertainment Expo) to do some networking, get caught-up on the industry and take my first look at California.

At the convention center there was three days of lectures overlapping the three-day expo. I went to as many conferences as I could, although once the show opened, it got difficult to drag myself away from the show floor.

From never-before-seen game footage to classic game design concepts, to the future of mobile gaming, I sat for three days taking notes. One of my favorite conference-sessions was called "Think Different and (Still) Succeed: Finding Success with Games that Fall Outside the Familiar".

Featured speakers included:

  • Moderator: Ted Price, President and CEO, Insomniac Games;
  • Jack Emmert, Creative Director, Cryptic Studios (City of Heroes);
  • Tom Fulp, Co-Founder, The Behemoth (Alien Hominid);
  • Atsushi Inaba, CEO, Clover Studio/Capcom (Viewtiful Joe 2);
  • Peter Molyneux, Managing Director, Lionhead Studios (Fable, The Movies)

In between sessions I fought my way into the EA 360-degree theater to catch a glimpse of the future. Between the unprecedented realism of their sports titles and the new shader-texturing seen in Need-For-Speed, it was quite a show!

Other favorite booths included:

  • Prince Of Persia 3 - although I'm pretty sure the live demo-level was really a pre-recorded movie;
  • FEAR - the most fun 2 minutes of FPS action I've had since I saw Doom for the first time.
  • PlayStation 3 - Commanding, Powerful, and even sexy. Lets hope the boomerang-controller feels as good as the console looks!

LA. was a ton of fun once I found my way around. I would love to live there but it was incredibly expensive, and very difficult to get around town cost-effectively. Overall the trip was a blast and I'm really glad I went. Can't wait for next year!
